Veteran Receives New Level Home in Key Ceremony

August 10, 2018 7:50 pm Published by Leave your thoughts

Level Homes recently had the honor of partnering with Operation: Coming Home to present a local veteran with the key to a brand new home in the Raleigh community of 5401 North.

The key was presented to Army Sgt. Anthony Von Canon and his family on July 12 in a formal ceremony that included remarks by first lady of North Carolina Kristin Cooper and Lieutenant Governor Dan Forest. Two military flyovers and a performance by the 82nd Airborne All American Chorus made the ceremony even more special for the Von Canons.

Sergeant Von Canon experienced devastating back, neck and hip injuries as the result of a rocket attack while he was serving in Afghanistan. He was on active duty from 2006-2010 and served in the reserves from 2010-2014. His wife Arlette is also a reservist. The couple has three young children.

Level Homes donated materials and labor to build the 4-bedroom house in conjunction with the Home Builders Association of Raleigh-Wake County, the U.S. Veterans Corps and several additional nonprofit groups. The home has accessibility features for Von Canon as well as a playroom for the children.

Operation: Coming Home is a nonprofit organization that provides new homes to service members who suffered severe injuries in the line of duty. The organization was founded in 2007 by a group of Raleigh veterans in conjunction with the Home Builders Association of Raleigh-Wake County. The veterans organized into a group called the U.S. Veterans Corps, which plans and directs the key ceremony each year. The homes are custom-built to fit the needs of each veteran and their families. Each year a different area builder leads the team to create a new “Hero Home.” This was the 17th home built by the program.

5401 North is a master planned community built for sustainable living. It features a community farm, natural spaces for outdoor recreation, a middle school and an elementary school. It will also have a community center and pool.
